The trainee board offers information and resources toward trainees in cognitive sciences (undergraduates, graduates, and early career researchers) regarding issues related to various career trajectories to help other trainees navigate school, jobs and life in general.

The WiCSC trainee board is made up of graduate students and early career researchers across universities in Canada who are engaged in research in the cognitive sciences. These board members are volunteers committed to helping our peers succeed and thrive both inside and outside of academia.

Founders

Erin Maloney

Trainee Board Founder and Trainee Board Liaison

University of Ottawa

Erin Maloney is an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Ottawa. Her research sits at the intersection of Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Education and focuses on cognitive and emotional factors that relate to academic achievement. She is passionate about both knowledge mobilization and increasing awareness of accessibility in science.

Fraulein Retanal

Trainee Board Founder and Chair

University of Ottawa

Fraulein Retanal is currently pursuing her PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Ottawa. As a woman of colour, Fraulein is a passionate advocate for supporting women in cognitive sciences and issues surrounding equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Taeko Bourque

Trainee Board Member

Carleton University

Taeko is pursuing her PhD in Cognitive Science at Carleton University. Her current research focuses on reading difficulties and approaches to intervention as well as the role of domain-specific vocabulary in bilingual children’s math performance. She is passionate about knowledge mobilization and works to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Vanessa Cunha

Trainee Board Member

University of Ottawa

Vanessa Cunha is pursuing a PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Ottawa. Her current research investigates the role of motion for improving recognition memory of novel faces. As a member of the WiCSC trainee board, Vanessa is looking forward to meeting other trainees and building a community. She is also excited to support other trainees in any way that she can.

Veronic Lynn Delage

Trainee Board Member

University of Ottawa

Véronic is currently pursuing her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests are in the domains of mathematical and spatial cognition. As a member of the WICSC trainee board she looks forward to bringing information to students to improve their graduate student experience!

Megan Kelly

Trainee Board Member

University of Waterloo

Megan is a PhD student at the University of Waterloo studying cognitive psychology. Her research focuses on memory and how it is influenced by the environment around us. As a trainee board member of WiCS-C, she is looking forward to providing networking and professional development opportunities and resources to other trainees at any stage.

Alexandria Samson

Trainee Board Member

University of Toronto

Alex(andria) Samson is a Psychology PhD student at the University of Toronto. Her current research focuses on sex and gender differences in Alzheimer’s disease development. As a strong advocate for sex and gender research and the support of women and females in STEM, Alex is looking forward to the work that she and the other WiCSC Trainee Board members will carry out!

Sabrina Shajeen Alam

Trainee Board Member

McGill University

Dr. Sabrina Shajeen Alam completed her PhD program in Educational Psychology at McGill University. Her research interest is to find out the impact of educational technology on children’s mathematics learning and cognition. She works to promote diversification in the scientific community through her academic and non-academic activities.

Pelin Tanberg

Trainee Board Member

University of Waterloo

Pelin Tanberg is a PhD candidate at the University of Waterloo specializing in cognitive psychology. Her research focuses on how we forget information on purpose to prevent memory overload. As a member of the WiCSC trainee board, Pelin looks forward to providing professional development opportunities to other trainees and advocating for the representation of women in STEM.

Madeline Wood

Trainee Board Member

University of Toronto

Madeline Wood is pursuing her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Toronto and Sunnybrook Research Institute. Her research aims to understand how sex/gender differences in risk factors contribute to women’s vulnerability to Alzheimer’s disease. She is passionate about advancing gender equity and women’s representation in all aspects of neuroscience and psychology.
